Clearstream, the post-trade business of Deutsche Börse Group, has announced the opening of a domestic market link to Kenya, effective June 29, 2026. The connection represents Clearstream's 60th domestic market link globally and makes it the only International Central Securities Depository offering direct access to the Kenyan market.

The new link provides institutional investors with streamlined access to Kenyan financial instruments through a unified omnibus account structure. The connection supports trading and settlement of Kenyan government bonds, infrastructure bonds, and treasury bills. Standard Chartered Kenya will operate as the local cash correspondent bank for Kenyan Shilling transactions and serve as the custodian working with the Central Bank of Kenya.

Clearstream clients can now settle and safekeep Kenyan government debt securities, utilize Kenyan debt instruments within collateral management systems, and conduct foreign exchange services for the Kenyan Shilling through a single access point. The arrangement eliminates the need for local registration or separate account opening procedures.

Kenya has emerged as a prominent economic center in East Africa, with expectations for inclusion in global market indices drawing increased international investor attention. The new Clearstream link addresses growing demand for easier capital flows into the regional market.

Jan Willems, Head of Global Markets at Clearstream, stated that the Kenya connection represents a significant step in the company's mission to provide investors with access to promising emerging markets.

David Luusa, Director of Financial Markets at the Central Bank of Kenya, noted that the link is expected to enhance liquidity in government securities, expand the investor base, and strengthen the resilience of Kenya's domestic debt market. He emphasized the development's importance for modernizing Kenya's financial infrastructure and advancing its position as an African financial center.

Birju Sanghrajka, Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Kenya, highlighted that the partnership will likely attract greater foreign participation in local government securities, bringing capital into the economy and improving market transparency and efficiency.
